Přednášející / Speaker: Regina Barzilay 

Regina Barzilay je počítačová vědkyně, profesorka a vedoucí Fakulty umělé inteligence na Jameel Clinic Massachusettského technologického institutu (MIT). Vyvíjí metody strojového učení pro objevování léků a klinickou umělou inteligenci. V minulosti pracovala na počítačovém zpracování přirozeného jazyka. Její výzkum byl oceněn MacArthurovým stipendiem, cenou NSF Career Award a AAAI Squirrel AI Award for the Benefit of Humanity. Je členkou National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine a American Ademy of Arts and Science.

School of Engineering Distinguished Professor of AI & Health in the Department of Computer Science and the AI Faculty Lead at MIT Jameel Clinic. She develops machine learning methods for drug discovery and clinical AI. In the past, she worked on natural language processing. Her research has been recognized with the MacArthur Fellowship, an NSF Career Award, and the AAAI Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity. Regina is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Science-popularizing lecture from the series Science at the Prague Castle

Nikdo z nás, ani ti zdraví jedinci, příliš nevíme, jak se naše zdraví bude v budoucnu vyvíjet. Nevíme, jaké nemoci nás postihnou, jaký budou mít dopad na náš život ani zda bude jejich léčba účinná. To se nyní může změnit s pomocí využití modelů umělé inteligence (AI) a její dovednosti předpovídat budoucí výsledky. Profesorka Barzilay ve své přednášce vysvětlí, jak tyto modely vytvářejí své predikce; ilustrovat to bude na konkrétních příkladech diagnostiky a léčby rakoviny. V druhé části přednášky se pak zaměří na využití AI při vývoji léčiv.

Even healthy individuals have little insight into their future health trajectory. We don't know which diseases will afflict us in the future,  how they will impact our life and whether a specific treatment will help. AI models have potential to transform this centuries-old status quo due to their uncanny capacity to predict future outcomes. In this talk, prof. Barzilay explains at  a high level how these models make their predictions and illustrates it with specific examples in the area of cancer diagnosis and treatment. In the second part she will focus on AI based methods for drug discovery.
